It’s certainly warm for all of us running around on stage with big furry puppets draped over us, but according to Jerry Wasserman of the Province we may be creating a lot more warmth than we thought, as he’s calling Avenue Q this years’ summer sizzler!

This year’s summer sizzler is Avenue Q, the hit American puppet musical that crosses South Park with Sesame Street, has one of the hottest sex scenes you’ll ever see on stage (puppet sex), and some of Broadway’s wittiest songs. Director Peter Jorgensen and a wonderful cast give it a peerless production. Avenue Q will vie with Bard on the Beach’s Hamlet as this summer’s must-see show.

Avenue Q at the Arts Club

Director Peter Jorgensen and I had a lovely interview with Andrea Warner from the Georgia Straight over our lunch break.  We talked a lot about puppets, and the process we were going through in rehearsals to make the puppets more human both for our audiences, and also for the actors on stage playing traditional non-puppet roles. We also talked about puppet sex….

IT’S A SATURDAY afternoon on Granville Island, and outside the Arts Club, crowds of shoppers and tourists move in the usual waves of bustle and chaos. Nothing is out of the ordinary. But inside and up the stairs of the venerable theatre company, there’s graphic, hot puppet sex going on. The fur is flying, so to speak, and nobody can stop laughing. Puppets giving blow jobs? Yep, this is Avenue Q.

With Avenue Q, Cassady works with every single puppet at some point during the play. “Peter said to me at the start that before Act 1 was over, I would have my hand up every puppet in the show, “chortled Cassady. “ It’s been really lovely to work with the cast who’ve developed the characters and allowed me to take their creations and embrace their characterizations.”

Back in 2008 when Nokia was supporting a games platform, they came up with an idea to shoot three short commercials to promote their newest video game MEGAMONSTERS.  These commercials were to be released virally and to be shot entirely with PUPPETS.  Naturally, I was thrilled.  I built three puppets for film, and 30 puppets that they would distribute as prizes to the public. Unfortunately, just as the videos were done editing and ready to be released- Nokia shut down their video gaming department and everything was shelved.

No one knows what happened to the 30 puppets that were shelved- but here’s the video of one of the commercials.

Nearing the end of Season 2 of Falling Skies, we were inundated daily with reporters, camera crews, and bloggers.  One of the groups was there specifically to catch the behind the scenes with all things Skitters.

Okay- so when they asked me to introduce Geoff Redknap I completely stumbled over his title, here’s why:  Geoff is kind of a renaissance man when it comes to his work on sets, he can pretty much do it all- prosthetic makeup effects, animatronics, puppeteering, and everything in-between.  On this particular day he had the rather non-glamourous job of laying in the mud and puppeteering the legs of the Skitter- which of course he was fantastic at, and why I landed on the title of “leg puppeteer’ for him.  I just wanted to clarify that Geoff is SO much more than just a leg puppeteer.  I should have said “this is Super-Geoff……”.
